Chromate Conversion Coating

Chem Film, also widely referred by the brand names Alodine or Iridite, is the application of a chromate conversion coating on aluminum alloys. Conversion coatings produce a finish which:
  • Protects the surface from corrosion
  • Provides a surface for better adhesion of primers, paints and powder coat
  • Conducts electricity
  • Extends shelf-life of parts while resisting staining and fingerprinting
  • Can be used for touch up of scrapes or bare spots from various causes

Classes

There are two classes of coating as specified in MIL-DTL-81706B and MIL-DTL-5541F.
Class 1A For maximum protection against corrosion, painted or unpainted.
Class 3 For protection against corrosion where low electrical resistance is required.

Types

There are two types of coating as specified in MIL-DTL-81706B and MIL-DTL-5541F.
Type I Compositions with hexavalent chromium.
Type II Compositions with no hexavalent chromium.
