Chromate Conversion Coating

Chem Film, also widely referred by the brand names Alodine or Iridite, is the application of a chromate conversion coating on aluminum alloys. Conversion coatings produce a finish which:
  • Protects the surface from corrosion
  • Provides a surface for better adhesion of primers, paints and powder coat
  • Conducts electricity
  • Extends shelf-life of parts while resisting staining and fingerprinting
  • Can be used for touch up of scrapes or bare spots from various causes

Classes of Coatings

There are two classes of coating as specified in Mil-C-81706, Class 1A and Class 3. Chromates that are QPL approved, qualifies the product for use in conforming to Mil-C-5541. The difference between the two classes is the applied film thickness of the chromate on the aluminum substrate. Film thickness is varied by concentration, pH and immersion time. Therefore, the same chromate solution can be used for both classes.
Class 1A:
  • Coating is used for maximum protection against corrosion on unpainted aluminum alloys.
  • Coating provides highest electrical surface resistance.
  • Coating significantly improves adhesion of a paint finish.
  • Visually, coatings are gold to yellowish brown.

Class 3:
  • Coating is used for protection against corrosion where low electrical resistance is required.
  • Visually, coatings are very light gold.

Chem Film / Chromate Conversion Coating For Aluminium Alloys

Aurous 19 QPL approved powdered chromate conversion coating for processing aluminium alloys to Mil-C-81706. Aurous 19 is a powedered chemical used to produce a protective chromate conversion coating on aluminium which minimizes corrosion and provides an improved bond for painting. The coating produced can be used as a final finish or can be dyed various colors. The innovative formulation enables the finisher to produce gold coatings with excellent corrosion protection as well as clear work using the same product.
650 ChromitAL TCP A liquid chemical used to form a protective conversion coating on aluminum srufaces without the use of hexavalent chromium.

RoHS compliant
QPL approved
Environmentally safe and non-toxic

Chromate Dyes

Certain chromate coatings may be dyed for identification and/or decorative purposes to produce a wide variety of colors. Specialty dyes offer an economical means for dyeing chromate conversion coatings on aluminum, cadmium or zinc.
